Unlock Flawless Curls: Honest CurlMix Hair Gel Review for Stunning Results

Curious about trying flaxseed gel for your natural curls? In this post, I’m sharing my honest experience with CurlMix — a clean beauty brand known for its handmade flaxseed gels. With ingredients like organic hemp seed oil, jojoba, and aloe, CurlMix claims their gels are gentle yet effective, even as a one-product styler.
I was searching for something more affordable, substantial, and cleaner to replace DevaCurl’s gel. I tried CurlMix by ordering their sample box featuring five of their most popular formulas.
What is the CurlMix Sample Box?
In August, I bought the CurlMix sample kit and tested each formula on freshly washed hair to see how long the hold lasted and how my curls felt throughout the week.

Before I dive into my results, here’s some critical context.
My first attempt with CurlMix didn’t go well. My hair was dry from the summer heat, and I was overdue for a trim, which made it hard for any product to perform.

After visiting my mom’s salon, my hair was straightened and trimmed by two inches. The improvement was instant: my curls were stronger, more defined, and easier to manage.
Summer had also loosened my curl pattern, so I used a Denman brush daily for a week to train it back. Once my routine stabilized, I tested the gels again, with better results.
My Experience with CurlMix Gels

Hair Growth Pure Flaxseed Gel
I used this gel solo for an entire week. I applied a dime-sized amount to small sections and scrunched. The hold lasted about two days before I had to restyle my front curls. By the end of the week, my hair felt dry, so I refreshed with water and reapplied only the gel.
Soften Hair Pure Flaxseed Gel
This was the first one I tested, but it underperformed due to my hair’s condition at the time. After my haircut, I tried again. The watery consistency made it easy to apply and worked much better for warmer weather. I still needed to reapply more often than I preferred.
The Verdict
Overall, I didn’t love the scent of most gels, but the Strengthening Gel was my favorite. It worked best as a one-product styler and was easy to reapply without buildup.
I did have to refresh my curls about 1–2 times per week, but the lightweight texture never made my hair feel sticky or heavy. I also appreciated that a little went a long way — even though the formula seemed gooey.
These gels are ideal for summer or humid climates when lightweight, hydrating stylers work best. I avoid wet styling as often during colder months, so I wouldn’t reach for them in winter.
Before & After Results
Before My Haircut: My curls were stretched, dry, and undefined. After My Haircut: Noticeably healthier curls with bounce, hydration, and shine.

FAQs About CurlMix Gels
Do CurlMix gels work on all curl types?
CurlMix gels are lightweight and work well for looser curls and delicate textures. If you have tighter coils, you might need to layer with a leave-in or oil for better hold.
Are CurlMix gels safe for color-treated hair?
Yes! They’re free from harsh ingredients like sulfates and drying alcohols, making them safe for color-treated curls.
Can I use CurlMix as a one-product routine?
Yes. I was able to use it with just water and got good results. However, depending on your hair’s needs, you may want a leave-in conditioner underneath.
What’s the best CurlMix gel for soft hold?
The “Soften Hair” formula has the lightest hold and is perfect for soft, bouncy results in warm weather.
Where can I buy CurlMix gels?
You can order directly from their website or look for the sample box to test all five formulas before committing to full sizes.
Final Thoughts on Curlmix
CurlMix offers a cleaner alternative to traditional gels, especially for those with sensitive scalps or who follow the curly girl method. While they may not be ideal for all seasons or curl types, they have a place in a summer curl routine.
