Heatless hairstyles can be a great way to stretch your curls, reduce daily manipulation, and avoid unnecessary heat damage. However, not every heatless style is automatically protective.
In my latest video, I explain what makes a heatless hairstyle low-manipulation, how mechanical damage happens, and what to look for when choosing a stretching method.
In this article, I’m sharing one of my favorite heatless styling techniques: overnight pillow curlers. This is the exact routine I use to refresh my curls without heat while creating soft, stretched definition.
Why I Love Pillow Curlers
There are dozens of heatless styling methods available today, including flexi rods, roller sets, banding, braids, bantu knots, and pillow curlers. None of these methods is automatically better than another. The best choice depends on your curl pattern, hair length, density, and the look you’re trying to achieve.
Personally, I keep coming back to pillow curlers because they’re comfortable enough to sleep in, help stretch my curls without heat, and allow me to refresh my wash-and-go without restyling every day.
Products Used in This Tutorial (my favorite)
These are the products I used to create this overnight heatless curl routine. While you don’t need these exact items to achieve similar results, these are the tools I’ve personally used and recommend.
Styling Tools
Satin Pillow Rollers (Best Overall)
I’ve been using these satin pillow rollers since my freshman year of college, more than 10 years ago. They’re comfortable enough to sleep in and create soft, stretched curls without heat.
Continuous Mist Spray Bottle
A continuous spray bottle makes it easy to evenly dampen your hair before styling without soaking it.
Alligator Hair Clips
Perfect for sectioning hair while applying products and setting each roller.
Barrette Clips
I use these to help secure sections while setting my pillow curls overnight.
Brushes & Detangling
Denman Brush Dupe
Helps distribute product evenly while smoothing each section before rolling.
Red by Kiss Detangling Brush
Great for gently detangling and smoothing curls before creating each pillow curl.
Styling Products
ORS Olive Oil Curl Style Mousse (Best Budget Option)
A lightweight mousse that provides definition and hold without making the hair feel stiff.
Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Mousse (Best for Longer Hold)
Great if you’re looking for extra definition and longer-lasting results.
Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Foam
Pairs well with the Curl Talk Mousse for additional definition and hold.
Finishing Products
Redken Spray Wax
Adds lightweight texture and separation without making curls crunchy.
Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil
Helps reduce frizz while adding shine as I separate the curls.
Obliphica Seaberry Hair Serum
A lightweight finishing serum that helps smooth flyaways and add shine.
Overnight Hair Protection
Satin Bonnet
Sleeping in a satin bonnet helps reduce friction and preserve the style overnight.
What Makes a Heatless Hairstyle Protective?
Before trying any heatless styling method, I recommend asking yourself a few questions:
- Does the style stretch my hair without pulling too tightly?
- Can I leave it in for several days?
- Is it comfortable?
- Can I remove it without snagging my hair?
If the answer is yes, you’re much more likely to reduce unnecessary manipulation and mechanical damage.
I go into each of these questions in more detail in the video above.
Why I Use Distilled Water on My Curly Hair
Living in Texas, I deal with hard water, and it’s rough on curls. Hard water can cause buildup, dryness, and dullness. That’s why I only use distilled water in my spray bottle.
I’ve even created a comprehensive guide to help you recover from hard water damage and revive your curls. Click here to access it in my Freebie Library.
Step-by-Step Heatless Curls Tutorial
Night Before: Setting the Curls
- Lightly mist detangled hair with distilled water (not soaking wet).
- Apply mousse section by section, then detangle with a Denman-style brush.
- Use the Red by Kiss detangling brush to smooth and separate sections.
- Clip each section with alligator clips to stay organized.
- Roll the back sections away from the face, and the front sections toward the face.
- Use larger rollers in the back (purple), but I recommend smaller ones (green) if your hair is wavy for better hold.
- Style bangs separately with a finger coil and pin in place.
- Cover your hair with a bonnet and sleep overnight.
Morning: The Heatless Curls Reveal
- Remove the bonnet and lightly mist Redken Spray Wax over the set curls.
- Use Olaplex Bonding Oil while removing curlers to help reduce frizz and add slip.
- Instead of separating after all curlers are out, I separate each curl immediately after removing it; this helps avoid missing hidden pieces.
How I Use Mousse and Foam for Tighter, Heatless Curls
Here’s another way to get the same heatless curls style, just with a tighter, longer-lasting hold. In this updated method, I used Not Your Mother’s Curl Talk Mousse and Foam together for extra definition and durability.
Before setting, I sprayed my hair generously with water to rehydrate it. This step is particularly beneficial for overnight heatless curls, as hair can dry out and flake quickly during styling. If you have longer or thicker hair, apply the mousse and foam in sections as you navigate through them to prevent your strands from hardening before all the pillow curls are in place.
This version is great if your curls tend to fall quickly or you’re working with mixed textures.
FAQs: Overnight Heatless Curls
Can heatless hairstyles still damage curly hair?
Yes. While heatless hairstyles eliminate heat damage, they can still cause mechanical damage if they’re too tight or require frequent manipulation. Choose styles that are comfortable, don’t pull on your scalp, and can be worn for several days without constant restyling.
Can I do heatless curls on wet or dry hair?
For best results, start with damp—not soaking wet—hair. This helps the curls set without overextending the drying time or risking frizz.
How long should I leave the rollers in?
It’s ideal to leave them in overnight, but if you’re short on time, aim for at least 4–6 hours to allow the curls to hold their shape.
Will heatless curls work on thick or textured hair?
Yes! The key is using the right styling products for your hair type and sectioning your hair correctly. Tools like mousse and spray wax can help curls last longer.
Can I do heatless curls with socks instead of rollers?
Yes! Heatless curls with socks are a popular DIY method for achieving curls without heat. If you don’t have pillow rollers, socks can work in a pinch—just be sure they’re soft and long enough to wrap the sectioned hair securely.
Final Styling Tips
- Twirl bangs away from the face for a soft finish.
- Apply Obliphica Seaberry Hair Serum for a shine boost.
- Finish with a light mist of hairspray to set the style in place without stiffness.
This method provides long-lasting, heatless curls without heat damage, perfect for maintaining healthy hair between wash days.
When heat styling, it’s best to choose methods that help you manipulate your curls less while keeping them healthy over time.
