Have you ever tried using flaxseed gel on your hair?
I discovered the CurlMix hair care line last summer while watching YouTube influencers review the products. At first glance, CurlMix seemed like a healthier alternative to harsh gels with harmful chemicals. Initially, the company sold kits with the ingredients needed to make the gel at home. Customers would prepare the gel themselves following the provided instructions.
Due to popular demand, CurlMix later launched pre-made gels targeting different hair concerns. The brand also claims these gels can be used alone as a one-product styler.
I had been searching for a gel stronger and cheaper than DevaCurl’s gel, which I had run out of. So, I purchased a sample kit to give CurlMix a try.
The CurlMix Sample Box
I bought the sample box in August and tested each gel long enough to determine how well my hair held up after a wash-and-go.
Before diving into my experience, I need to explain why my first attempt with the gel didn’t go well. When I tried the Soften Hair Pure Flaxseed Gel, the summer weather had left my hair extremely dry, and I badly needed a trim. My damaged ends didn’t allow the product to perform effectively.
After visiting my mother’s salon, I straightened my hair and trimmed off two inches. The difference was significant. My hair became much stronger and more manageable.
Summer weather had also loosened my curl pattern, so I used a Denman brush daily for a week to reset it. Once I returned to my regular styling routine, I gave the gels another try.
My Experience with CurlMix Gels
Hair Growth Pure Flaxseed Gel
I used this gel for an entire week without any additional products, and my hair responded well. I separated my hair into small sections, applied a dime-sized amount of gel, and scrunched. The gel provided hold for about two days before I needed to restyle problem areas, like my front hairline.
By the end of the week, my hair felt dry, so I completely restyled it using only the gel and a spray bottle of water.
Soften Hair Pure Flaxseed Gel
This was the first gel I tried, but the initial results weren’t great. My hair was very dry due to the summer heat and my overdue haircut. I had to reapply the gel multiple times and wet my hair to control frizz.
After my haircut, the product performed better. Its watery consistency made it easy to apply and ideal for summertime use.
The Verdict
Overall, I didn’t enjoy the scent of most gels, but the Strengthening Gel was my favorite. It worked best as a single-product styler and for reapplication throughout the week.
I noticed that I needed to reapply the gels once or twice during the week. Bu, they didn’t weigh down my hair. Their gooey consistency made me think I’d run out quickly, but that wasn’t the case.
These gels are great for summer when you need lightweight, hydrating products. But they won’t as effective in winter since I style my hair less to avoid getting sick.
Final Thoughts
CurlMix gels offer a gentler alternative to many drying gels on the market. But, their watery formula does not suit every season or hair type.
